Smooches for my Husband on Husband Appreciation Day – plus cookies! | DancesWithHooves Paper Design

What do you do when you find out it’s National Husband Appreciation Day on Saturday? You tell your husband Monday night that you’re going to treat him to dinner wherever he’d like (take out, of course, since there’s no other option presently), and start planning on a design for a card. At least that’s what I did.

An important note: National Husband Appreciation Day is a thing. It happens every April 18th! I’m just a little delayed in getting this posted… anyways, onwards and upwards:

But by the end of the week, he was asking for his dinner out. On Friday. It wasn’t Saturday yet!

Isn’t he just the CUTEST? I couldn’t resist him when I saw him and the rest of his adorable chubby pals in the set…

So, I agreed – so long as he promised not to mind having a ho hum dinner on “his special day” the following day, and began thinking about Plan B… as in, baking him his favorite cookies during all my free time on Saturday. HA. (Truth be known, when you only put one sheet in the oven at a time, you can get quite a bit done while it bakes! :))

Including putting the finishing touches on his card…

I’m entering this in F4A531 – Framed, where the challenge was to use a frame around your sentiment, (I went totally non-typical-for-me by using my yellow frame background at a non-matching angle to the sentiment! Must’ve been feeling wild and crazy!)

Ok, so the cookies. I call them my famous cookies. Why? Because I once overheard my father get asked why I didn’t have a boyfriend (around 20 years old), and what I heard him reply gave me mixed feelings: “I don’t know why. She makes really good cookies.”

Apparently good ol’ Dad figures that’s the selling point?

Anyway, I made this for my now-husband for deer hunting the first year we were dating. And whenever he is given the choice of a homemade treat, this is what he wants. 🙂 And my mom really loves ’em too, which caused me to take a picture of them after they came out of the oven to entice her. And her response caused me to take a couple more pictures. Because if you can’t get close enough to give the real thing, a picture is the next best thing, right? (Ok, maybe not when the picture is of a cookie that you cannot have. 🙂 )

In case you’re wondering, here’s the recipe, based upon a version I found in my town’s elementary school cookbook when I was just-learning-to-bake age. I’ve adapted it some over the first few years of making it – like adding copious amounts of vanilla, to make it just right. Whatever you do, though, use shortening. Don’t sell yourself short and think butter is going to make these better – this is one cookie where that is NOT the case!

  • 1 C Shortening
  • 1 C Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 C Brown Sugar, packed
  • 2 Large Eggs -2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp Salt -1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 2.5 C Flour (I used Whole Wheat)
  • 1 C Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (I used a combination of half mini and half regular chips as that’s what I had on hand… I rather liked the result!)
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line baking sheets with silicone baking mats or parchment.
  2. Mix sugars with shortening. Beat in eggs and vanilla; mixing well.
  3. Gradually add in flour (about a half cup at a time), as well as the baking soda and salt, mixing until combined.
  4. Mix in chocolate chips until evenly distributed, but be careful not to overmix.
  5. With a cookie scoop, drop scoops of dough on prepared baking sheet 2-3″ apart (I usually fit about 9 cookies on a large cookie sheet), and bake 10-12 or until beginning to turn golden brown. Be careful not to overbake – begin checking for doneness at 10 minutes.
  6. Remove sheet from oven and leave on baking sheet 3-5 minutes to finish baking; move to wire rack to finish cooling before storing in an airtight container.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog today – you make my day when you do! 🙂
