Monochromatic Pet Sympathy duo | DancesWithHooves Paper Design

img_1616Losing a pet is never easy.  And to feel the love and care of friends during the moments when your heart is the most raw is so important.  That’s why when given reason to make a card for Meghan and her family upon the loss of their young family dog, I made two… because you never know when the occasion will arise that another will be needed.

A friend of mine recently experienced a bad week.  She first had to take two cats to the vet to be euthanized (neither were “hers,” but they were part of her extended family, neither cat was ailing due to related circumstances – it was just really bad timing), and then with further bad – no, terrible – timing, three days later, the loss of her family’s dog – a loss made particularly difficult due to the circumstances (hit by car) and the fact that this was the first pet she had lost in her lifetime aside from old age – and even then, she hadn’t lost many.  For me, at least when I have to say goodbye, whether planned or unexpected, I now know, after years of experience in the worst sort of hurt there is (to me at least), that there will be better days.  That the pain eventually won’t be so piercing.  That I will eventually reach a time when the ache isn’t constant, the tears aren’t daily, and the thought of my beloved pet no longer being there hanging over my head like the darkest of clouds every waking second.  For Meghan, unfortunately, time will only show her this.  And she has to walk through it with two little ones at home, and a husband whose job takes him away for long periods at a time.

My heart breaks for her.

She needs a hug.

I hope a paper hug will help!

So hugs, and hearts, is where I started for this design.  I took it two different ways at the end, but each started out as a matching pair.

First stamping and fussy-cutting the sentiment, then die-cutting the hearts, stamping the pet silhouette in a complementary tone, then adding the metallic ink to the wing and halo stamp before adding it to the serene design.

To begin to put the design together, I selected background dies to compose the backdrop, each of which is backed with a panel of plain gray cardstock selected from my pre-cut scraps to further balance the design and draw the eye through.

The heart and sentiment are adhered to foam sheets to pop them off the backdrop and prevent the design from looking too plain.

Inside, the sentiment is stamped in the same color as the pet, and the card is finished with one of my signature envelopes.

Birdie Birthday take one and two | DancesWithHooves Paper Design

Popping in real quick to share a pair of fun birthday cards I created this weekend making use of some of my new-found Online Coloring Challenge Road Trip knowledge!

It was fun to experiment with color mashing and pairing some colors together for these birds that I normally wouldn’t… I rather like the end result!

SC787 Masculine Grouse Birthday | DancesWithHooves Paper Design

img_1530

Every year, just two months after our Anniversary, I get to make two more cards for my husband – his birthday is just a few days before Valentine’s Day! 🙂 A few weeks ago I made his Valentine, but after a lot of head scratching, sleepless nights (well, not totally but nearly…), and multiple “leave-it-and-come-back-to-try-again-laters,” I wrapped it up yesterday, just in time to get his cake in the oven! 🙂

I’ve had my eye on this stamp set for him ever since Hero Arts released it, but didn’t know what to do with it, so I just admired it from afar.  This fall, I found it on eBay for half of it’s original price, brand-new… and figured, now’s my shot!

So, here’s what I came up with.  Piece by piece, bit by bit, and multiple studies of photographs of the Minnesota Ruffed Grouse, the design is done. I hope he likes it!

Find Joy in the Ordinary – for National Send a Card to a Friend Day (February 7th)| DancesWithHooves Paper Design

Tomorrow (February 7th) is National Send a Card to a Friend Day!

Send-a-Card-to-a-Friend-Day-BLOG

What a wonderful day to celebrate the joy that these paper hugs have the potential to contain for their recipients!  I didn’t even realize such a day existed until a few weeks ago, and I started shortly thereafter working on something quick and easy that I could put in a few minutes of work on here and there and have ready to go in time.

To me, cards are handmade kindness, and should bring love and joy to the recipient.  I also think happy colors help. 🙂 And since it’s winter in Minnesota, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to use the cute images from one of my favorite stamp sets.

I used my Gina K mini wreath builder stencil to get my placement right, got out my distress inks, and went to town. I knew I’d want to use foam to add some dimension and substance to the card and pop the panel up off the back, but it wasn’t until I decided who the card would go to that I decided what color the base would be.  This person’s favorite color is purple, so problem solved! 🙂

I came back in and added glitter detailing to the mittens to make it more fun.

This card was so fun to make – I hope the recipient loves it!
